Liberty

Black continuous line drawing of two Statue of Liberty figures standing side by side on stepped pedestals, one male and one female. Both wear classical robes and spiked crowns, hold a raised torch in one hand and a tablet in the other.

Dreaming

I am in America. From a distance, I can see the Statue of Liberty, but there are two of them – one male and one female. I say to my mum that I want to go there one day.

I am at the bottom of the Statue of Liberty. There are restrictions as to how many people can go inside; it is twenty at a time. Me and a female friend go inside when we know we shouldn’t; we jump the queue. We climb up some narrow stairs, and after a while we decide to take off our clothes. We put them in a pile in the corridor and our shoes on a ledge around the corner. We run up flights of stairs laughing, then back down again till we reach the exit. We realise we haven’t got our clothes on, so we run back up. I catch a glimpse of myself in a large mirror and admire my naked body. I am aware that there is a baseball game going on outside; there are loads of people on the stairs and in the corridor. We turn a corner and find our shoes, one of mine and one of hers, but they are both baby-sized. We keep going and find the other shoes. I look behind doors for our clothes; we find them around the next corner. As we do, a black lady approaches and asks what we are doing. We ignore her and carry on laughing. We feel triumphant.

I am in Ant’s house. It is spotlessly clean and decorated pale green and cream with new curtains. I ask him where his girlfriend is; his bottom lip quivers. He explains that she left him on Friday and has gone back to London because he wanted a ceramic pot/vase on display and she didn’t. I feel relieved that I haven’t moved in with Tom straight away, so I wouldn’t do the same.

Abi and Andy have bought a new house; it is very old and falling apart, but it has loads of potential. I am looking around the house in all the rooms, mainly the bedrooms. There are men fitting floorboards and replacing windows. Connor’s bedroom is finished, decorated and carpeted, but it is horrible. It has green and black spotted wallpaper and carpet. Connor is on the bed playing the games console. I go around more rooms until I get to Abi’s bedroom. Men are putting in wardrobes, but they are mismatched. Some belong to Mum. Abi says she has to check under the bed for a huge spider, as Andy is scared of them.

It is time to go, but I want to look in the attic. I stand on an empty fish tank and pull myself up into the attic. There are more rooms up there; it is boarded out and decorated. There is a room that serves as an office. Abi calls me down as the owner is coming back; the house isn’t Abi’s till the end of the day. I jump down, and the owner goes to the fish tank and flicks some switches, which turn the lights off in the loft.
