Comfort

Watercolour and ink illustration of a CPAP machine with a dark display and circular control dial, connected to a flexible ribbed hose and a clear breathing mask with blue head straps. The equipment rests on pale bedding beside a bedside lamp and a leafy potted plant.

Dreaming

I am in Jellicombe when I see Karen; she looks a mess. She is fatter; her hair is wet, but a mess, and she is tired and crying. I ask what’s wrong, and she says she’s been up with Charlie all night and that he’s really wheezy. She has Charlie in a pram; I look in and see something almost strapped to his face to keep a dummy in, but then I wonder if it’s actually a CPAP machine. I realise I should comfort Karen, but I wait until she comes to me. She throws her arms around me and cries. I rub her back and soothe her. I walk over to the pram; Charlie is stirring, so I rock it.
