Water

Black continuous line drawing of two elderly men struggling to wade through water, with worried expressions, hunched bodies and arms outstretched for balance. One man wears a brimmed hat and uses a walking stick, while both have their trouser legs rolled down unevenly towards their knees. Water splashes around their legs as they step forward.

Dreaming

I am driving my car with Tom in the passenger seat; he is sleeping. We are on Colt Way, before the roundabout, heading home. Up ahead and to the left is a controlled volcano; it is erupting, and loads of big rocks, slates, and rubble are falling down. I have to drive my car through it. Tom wakes up and closes the window so it doesn’t come in. There are huge bits of rubble hitting the car. I am scared the windscreen is going to smash, but it doesn’t. We manage to get through it all safely. We go to another part of Colt Way, where we have to cross a bridge that is over some water. There is a policeman letting us through; we are the only car on this road, even though it’s the busiest road in the city. A big wave comes up and over the bridge and soaks the car; I can feel us floating slightly. We get through it okay and drive on, but in my rearview mirror, I can see two old men trying to walk through it. I stop the car, run back to them, and help them through. One of them is having breathing problems; I listen to his heart – it is erratic – and lay him on some grass before calling an ambulance. After a while, the old man says he is fine again and doesn’t need the ambulance.

I am sitting on the sofa with Tom when his phone rings. I look at who it is; it says, Granny. I pass him the phone, and he starts chatting to her. I leave the room and then realise that both his Grandmothers have died; I wonder how one of them is phoning him.

I go into my kitchen and see the freezer is leaking water; the floor has sunk with the weight of it. The water is about a foot deep and spreading. I feel scared and panicky and can’t work out how I am going to stop the water and how I am going to clean it up. Tom comes into the kitchen, looks at it, and says it is because my plug is bent out of shape. He manages to stop the water straight away. I am scared that as soon as he leaves, it will start again and I won’t be able to stop it.
