Mud

Black continuous line drawing of a tent pitched in the middle of an open grassy field, with guy ropes secured to the ground and the entrance partially open. Rolling hills, distant bushes and scattered tufts of grass surround the tent.

Dreaming

Izzy is pregnant; she is insisting that we take her to the hospital as she wants to give birth. I keep saying to her that it isn’t time yet, as she isn’t having contractions and her waters haven’t broken yet, but she still insists. Izzy becomes Josh and says, “Actually, my waters have broken.” I try pointing out that it’s impossible as he is a male, but still he is insistent. I change into my pyjamas and say I am ready to go. I know I will end up staying at the hospital for the night, so I want to be ready for bed. I have no shoes on, though. As we all go out the door, I decide to get changed. Izzy, Dad, Abi, and Mike go and get in Dad’s car, and I go upstairs to get changed. I search for my jeans, but I can’t find them. I lie on the bed and want to go to sleep, but someone comes up and says that they are all waiting for me in the car. I put on some clothes and shoes and go out to the car. Dad is parked on yellow lines, and I climb in the back with Mike and Abi. There are balls of mud in the back of the car with us.

Abi and I are in the middle of a field; it is very muddy. We are camping, although it is winter. I awake and am lovely and warm, snuggled under a blanket. Abi says she has been cold all night, and I realise she had no blanket. I am driving Dad’s car. Every time I try to go forward, the wheels keep spinning; I have to go backwards and then drive forwards in a big circle instead of just straight forwards. Abi is telling me I’ll be unable to get to the top of the field, but I know we will. She then says the mud is too deep; we won’t get through it and will have to find an alternative exit. We go to another exit and manage to get out of the field.

I am in Caroline’s house; she is being kind and polite towards me, which surprises me. Ken won’t look at me or talk to me, which also surprises me. Greg is there. Ken wants to move the old sofa out to the garage, and Greg is going to help, but he just sits around watching. Ken is lifting the furniture on his own. Caroline tells me that Greg was really hurt when I left him. A toddler comes into the room; he has ginger curly hair. He wants a drink. I go to the foot of the stairs to find his cup and find it on a ledge where the plaster of the wall should have been. I take the boy in the kitchen with me and open his cup. Inside is a mixture of tea and cola, and I am really angry that someone would be giving a baby these drinks. I empty the cup and look for something else for him to drink. I can’t find anything; everything has been moved from where it used to be. Caroline comes into the kitchen and explains that they had to get rid of some cupboards as they didn’t have the space, but there are actually loads more cupboards. She finds me something to give to the boy and explains that they don’t have milk in the house anymore as she is allergic to it. I pick the boy up and carry him; I am surprised at how difficult I find it to do. I comment on how it has only been a couple of years since my youngest was a baby/toddler, and I can’t understand why I’ve forgotten how to carry him.
